Department for Social Development points the way for Lisburn

Wednesday, 18 April 2007

Visitors to Lisburn are set to benefit from improved pedestrian signage thanks to the Department for Social Development (DSD) and Lisburn City Council.

The £121,000 scheme involved replacing all city centre signage with a co-ordinated system of branded signs to improve the information available to both visitors and local people.  A total of 28 high quality signs have been erected in strategic locations within the city, containing key information such as maps and pointers with historical and general interest facts.  DSD provided £69,000 towards the overall cost of the project with the remainder coming from Lisburn City Council.

Social Development Minister, David Hanson said:  “Since being awarded city status in 2002, Lisburn has grown from strength to strength.  The completion of this environmental improvement scheme is yet another positive step.

“One of the key benefits of the new scheme is that it improves access to Lisburn’s Historic Quarter which is currently undergoing a significant level of regeneration.  The new signage will contribute to the continued growth and development of this important part of Lisburn, which contains approximately half of all the commercial properties in the city centre.  I am confident that it improves the marketing of all areas of the city centre and will increase the level of business to traders.”

Alderman Edwin Poots of Lisburn City Council said:  “The new scheme will greatly enhance the City Centre experience, providing quality signage to direct pedestrians to the key cultural and historic sights in Lisburn City.  The city centre continues to prosper as a key economic hub, with the new signage scheme enabling visitors to easily find their way.”
