Ritchie welcomes Stormont ''Camp Out''

Tuesday, 4 December 2007

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie MLA today welcomed the commitment of volunteers from organisations working with homeless people who are holding an overnight “camp out” in the grounds of Stormont.

The “camp out” seeks to highlight the issues of homelessness, affordability and the funding of the social housing programme.

The Minister said: “Housing is my number one priority and an injection of capital into social and affordable housing is desperately needed. Without that investment, waiting lists will grow and homelessness will inevitably increase.

“This is a particularly difficult time of year for those who find themselves homeless. I have made it clear that I want to champion the rights of the vulnerable members of our society and to do everything possible to ensure that they have the same opportunities as everyone else. The work of the voluntary sector helps to ensure that this becomes a reality. I welcome their commitment and their support."

Margaret Ritchie then made reference to the draft budget for housing.

She said: At present there is a massive 63% shortfall in the capital needed for housing. However, the budget is in draft form and I am leaving no stone unturned in both seeking to get the budget increased and looking at alternative ways of raising the necessary capital.”
