Ritchie announces £1.2million regeneration boost for Kilkeel

Friday, 5 December 2008

Minister for Social Development Margaret Ritchie today announced a £1.2million regeneration scheme in Kilkeel town centre.

The plans, which will be a major boost for the Kilkeel area, include:

  • the undergrounding of cables;
  • upgrading of footpaths;
  • increased lighting; and
  • improvements to street furniture.

The scheme covers Newry Street, Newcastle Street, Bridge Street and Greencastle Street. Public consultation on the plans will begin during March 2009. Work is then expected to start in April 2009 and finish by March 2010.

Margaret Ritchie said: “This is a great boost for Kilkeel. It will see major changes in Kilkeel town centre, making it more appealing to residents, businesses and visitors.

“I want our towns across Northern Ireland to be places which provide opportunities for all. Kilkeel is no different. This major investment of around £1.2million is designed to target areas that are perceived as unattractive, yet have the potential to act as a catalyst in reinvigorating the town centre to improve trading conditions and encourage private sector investment in Kilkeel.”

The major Public Realm Improvement scheme is being implemented by the Department for Social Development’s Regional Development Office, in partnership with Newry & Mourne District Council.

Notes to Editors:
