‘Out of the Darkness’ photographic exhibition opens at Crumlin Road Gaol

Monday, 15 December 2008

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie MLA, today launched the ‘Out of the Darkness’ photographic exhibition at the historic Crumlin Road Gaol.

This acclaimed exhibition provides a reminder of life in Northern Ireland over the last 40 years and is the concept of the Northern Ireland Press Photographers Association.

Minister Ritchie said: “I am delighted to welcome the ‘Out of the Darkness’ exhibition to the Crumlin Road Gaol. The Gaol provides a unique backdrop for the work of the Press Photographers Association. It is another example of good public use of the Gaol following two successful series of public tours that attracted nearly 16,000 visitors, an art exhibition, an evening celebrating the music and dance of the Ulster-Scots, Irish and ethnic cultures and the production of Macbeth back in 2007.

“It is intended that the Gaol will play a key role in the regeneration of this part of North Belfast. It is developing into a hub for tourism and cultural events for local people and visitors alike. By hosting this photographic exhibition, another step is being taken towards the realisation of this ambition. While the photographs chronicle the significant changes that have occurred in everyday life here, it is equally my desire that the successful redevelopment of the Gaol and Girdwood Park site will serve as a symbol of change and hope for the economic regeneration of North Belfast.”

The exhibition will be open to the public from 2.00pm to 6.00pm, Monday to Friday each week, from 15 December 2008 to 9 January 2009. Admission is free. The exhibition will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

As the Gaol is still undergoing major renovation work, visitors with any special access requirements should contact Paul McWilliams on 028 9072 6034 to discuss how these could be accommodated.
