Ritchie opens new look Ballymoney town centre

Wednesday, 16 December 2009

Social Development Minister, Margaret Ritchie, officially opened the new £421,000 Public Realm Scheme in Ballymoney town centre today.

The scheme involved the upgrading of street lighting and furniture, the replacement of existing street surfaces and the introduction of a cycle lane to link the train station to the town centre. It will enhance the overall appearance of the area for both residents and visitors to the historic town.

Margaret Ritchie said: “I welcome this investment which will help to stimulate private sector investment in Ballymoney, and lead to the continued revitalisation of this historic town.

“These environmental improvements demonstrate my commitment to the ongoing development of Ballymoney and ensures that all necessary action is taken to maximise regeneration opportunities for the well being of the entire community.”

Quality Tegula bricks, along with traditional style street lighting columns and lanterns, now enhance the footpaths of Main Street along with the new cycle lane linking the town centre to the train station on Seymour Street.

Commenting on the scheme, the Mayor, Alderman Frank Campbell, said: “My Council is delighted with the improvements to the streetscape in Main Street which have created a safer and more pleasant environment for pedestrians. I thank Minister Ritchie for this investment by her Department in our historic town.”

John McKinley, Project Manager for the scheme and Roads Service, Northern Division's Section Engineer for Ballymoney, added his appreciation to Patrick Bradley Ltd for completing the scheme with the minimum of disruption to normal traffic flow, residents and traders. Mr McKinley congratulated Patrick Bradley Ltd for completing the scheme within the programme and within budget; he also acknowledged the co-operation from the local Businesses and residents during the consultation process and construction of the scheme.
