£1.5 million Kilkeel scheme gets go ahead from Minister Ritchie
Friday, 13 February 2009Minister for Social Development, Margaret Ritchie, has confirmed that the £1.5million Public Realm Improvement Scheme for Kilkeel will go ahead later this year.
The news follows confirmation that all the funding required to deliver the scheme is now in place.
Minister for Social Development Margaret Ritchie said: “I have been concerned about the condition of Kilkeel town centre for many years. This major scheme will bring about major changes to the public realm in the town centre, making it more attractive for residents, businesses and visitors alike.
"This major investment of £1.5million will target areas of the town centre that are currently perceived as unattractive and have the potential to act as a catalyst in reinvigorating the town centre."
This will be a major boost for to the town and will include the undergrounding of cables, upgrading of footpaths, increased lighting and a rationalisation of street furniture
The Minister went on to say: “I want to encourage investment in our towns and cities that contribute to our growing economy and this project will help to improve trading conditions, encourage private sector investment and attract visitors to Kilkeel.”
The work to design and implement the scheme will commence in April and finish in 2010 and will cover Newry Street, Newcastle Street, Bridge Street and Greencastle Street. Public consultation on the plans will take place early in the summer.

- The total cost of the scheme is £1,448,550. This includes £1,300,000 from the Department for Social Development (DSD). Newry & Mourne District Council are contributing £150,000.
