Margaret Ritchie approves below inflation Housing Executive rent increase

Thursday, 12 February 2009

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie MLA, today approved a below inflation rent increase for Housing Executive tenants.

The rent increase, which is understood to be the lowest ever, will see an increase of 1.95% in the coming financial year.

The Minister has kept the rent increase to a minimum while seeking to provide sufficient funding for the Northern Ireland Housing Executive’s maintenance programmes. The increase will mean, on average, an additional £1 per week for tenants

Margaret Ritchie said: “This is all about putting tenants first. In these times of financial hardship, every penny counts. I have therefore resisted calls for an above inflation rent increase. I do not think that would be appropriate at this time. The rent increase will actually be below the rate of inflation.

“What’s more, 80% of Housing Executive tenants will not have to pay it, as they are on housing benefits.”

Notes to editors:

  1. There are around 90,000 Housing Executive tenants in Northern Ireland.
