Minister Ritchie announces commencement of £2million refurbishment project at Lagan Weir
Wednesday, 7 January 2009Department for Social Development Minister, Margaret Ritchie MLA, has today announced that the Lagan Weir is to undergo its first major refurbishment since it was built in 1994.
The £2million contract was recently awarded to local firm John Graham (Dromore) Ltd and work commenced this week.
Speaking about today’s announcement, the Minister said: “This major refurbishment project will protect the Department’s investment in the weir which has been a catalyst for over £1billion investment along the riverfront. It has helped to transform this part of Belfast making it a focal point within the city.
"Furthermore this £2million project will have a positive impact on Northern Ireland’s construction industry and the wider economy. It is a very welcome shot in the arm for the industry at this difficult time.”
The contract will involve the refurbishment of the weir’s hydraulic rams which control the massive 32 tonne fish belly gates that raise and lower to control the water levels upstream of the weir.
The project, which commenced in January, is due to finish August 2010.
Notes to Editors:
- Following the dissolution of Laganside Corporation the weir and the maintenance of the 4.8 km of river which it impounds now fall under the responsibility of the Department for Social Development.
- The Lagan Weir was one of the country's most prestigious civil engineering contracts and was commissioned in January 1991 and finished in March 1994 at a cost of £14million.
- The contract will involve the refurbishment of the weir’s hydraulic rams which control the massive 32 tonne fish belly gates that raise and lower to control the water levels upstream of the weir.
- As part of the project each of the weir gates will be enclosed using stop logs and will then be pumped out to allow the maintenance of the gates including replacement of seals and complete repainting.
- In order to facilitate the works it is likely that the Lagan Weir footbridge will be periodically closed to the public. Any closure will be announced in advance. The Department apologies for any inconvenience to the public due to this essential maintenance work.
