Ritchie calls for public’s views on the regeneration of Downpatrick

Friday, 22 January 2010

Social Development Minister, Margaret Ritchie MLA has called on the people of Downpatrick to express their views on proposals for the regeneration of the town centre.

Minister Ritchie today visited an exhibition outlining the draft masterplan proposals for the town which will remain on display at the St Patrick's Centre for the next eight weeks.

The draft masterplan proposals include:

  • enhancing the setting of historic streets and buildings whilst also identifying areas of new mixed use development;
  • identifying development opportunities which will improve the town centre as a place in which to live, work, shop and visit;
  • resolving congestion in the town centre as a key priority.

Margaret Ritchie said: "This is a great opportunity for the people of Downpatrick to help shape the future of their town. The masterplan seeks to complement Downpatrick’s unique historic environment, particularly its early Christian heritage and its clear associations with St Patrick, by proposing development that will secure the reputation of Downpatrick as an attractive visitor destination.

“I believe that this plan will deliver my vision to have buildings, streets and spaces that are safe and friendly, provide a focus for community life and make Downpatrick more appealing to visitors. The masterplan is ambitious however it provides a realistic plan for taking advantage of the town’s natural setting.

“I have been encouraged by the willingness of the private sector to get involved in the process through the Downpatrick Business Forum. There is real optimism that the development opportunities will be taken up in the coming years and increase the economic vibrancy of the town.

“I am calling on everyone with a vested interest in the future of the town to give their views on the proposals. This feedback is essential to ensure that once finalised, the masterplan accurately represents a shared vision for the future of the town.”

Councillor William Dick, Chairman of Down District Council, in welcoming the production of a masterplan for the future co-ordinated development of the town and surrounding area said: "It is important that as many people as possible engage in the consultation process for the Downpatrick Masterplan. The sustainable development of the town is of fundamental importance to residents, businesses and visitors alike. It is vital that as many stakeholders as possible contribute views to inform the development of the proposals."

Jonathan Walsh, Chairman of Downpatrick Business Forum said: "As the Chairman of Downpatrick Business Forum, I have been extremely fortunate to have participated on the advisory panel for the Master plan. We have all been impressed by what has been produced and excited by the prospects for the future Downpatrick. The Masterplan comes in the wake of recent developments such as the new hospital complex at the Downshire, the new South Eastern Regional College campus in the town, the new Downpatrick Cinema and the planned Public Realm scheme for the town centre.

"Residents and visitors alike can already feel the vibrancy that has liberated the town. The Masterplan sets out the blue print for a town we can all be proud off as well as making us a destination for commerce and tourism. The public consultation allows you to have your say on the development of your town and be a part of the new Downpatrick."
