Attwood - Construction award puts ‘Belfast Streets Ahead’

Social Development Minister, Alex Attwood MLA, today congratulated Farrans (Construction) Ltd, on their latest award for their work on the 'Belfast Streets Ahead' project.

The national Silver award, from the Considerate Constructors Scheme, is in recognition of the high standards of consideration towards the general public, the environment, local stakeholders and the Farrans workforce during phase one of the project.

Alex Attwood said: “People shopping in Belfast and traders alike will greatly benefit when this work is complete. There is no doubt that it is an ambitious programme of works. This award recognises the skills, dedication, care and consideration of the Belfast Streets Ahead construction team.

“I congratulate Farrans on receiving this national award. This is the second consecutive year that they have received an award for their work on the project.”

Speaking after the awards ceremony, John McReynolds, Farrans’ Contracts Manager said: “The Belfast Streets Ahead project is a very challenging project and a tremendous effort is being made by everyone on the team to deliver it as considerately as possible, with particular attention being paid to the needs of businesses, shoppers, and visitors to the city centre.

"We are therefore delighted that our efforts have been recognised with this award and I would like to congratulate everyone involved.”

Belfast Streets Ahead scheme, a £28million project is currently transforming 14 of the main streets in Belfast City Centre.

  2. This award covers the following streets: Arthur Square; Ann Street; Cornmarket; Arthur Place; Arthur Street; Castle Lane; Callender Street; Fountain Street; College Street; Queens Street; Fountain Lane, Castle Street, Castle Place and Donegall Place.
  3. Considerate Constructors Scheme, started in 1997, operates voluntary Site and Company Codes of Considerate Practice, with which participating construction companies and sites register. The Scheme is a non profit making, independent organisation founded by the industry to improve its image. The Scheme is neither grant maintained nor funded by the Government and is solely financed by its registrations.
  4. Considerate Constructors Scheme Annual National Site Awards 2010 took place from 19 April to 6 May 2010 and Farrans were presented with their award by Julia Evans, Chief Executive, National Federation of Builders on Wednesday 28 April 2010, Plaisterers' Hall, London.
  5. The 2010 Awards were given to the highest scoring 7½% of sites, which have completed in the previous year. There were 580 winners from over 7600 eligible sites, for a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award.
  6. An independent panel reviewed all eligible sites and decided whether a site has reached the standard required to win a National Award and what level of Award it should receive. The selection is based on the points given by the Scheme’s Monitor, as verified against the national marking averages, and only after approval from the client. Other points taken into consideration include the manner in which any complaints have been handled by the site.
