Attwood celebrates supported housing for older people

Monday, 7 June 2010

Social Development Minister Alex Attwood was reminded that ‘home is where the heart is’, when he met one of Belfast’s oldest citizens earlier today.

The Minister met with St Finnian’s House resident, Mrs Ellen Lawther, who recently celebrated her 101st birthday, at the launch of Abbeyfield Week at the Waterfront Hall.

Organised by the Abbeyfield Belfast Society, the week of celebration provides an opportunity for residents, their family and friends, staff and volunteers, to come together to celebrate all that is good about independent living in later life.

Alex Attwood said: "I want to pay tribute to the work of the Abbeyfield Society in helping to alleviate urgent housing need for older people. The organisation has become synonymous with a ‘home from home’, where our more mature citizens can remain active and independent, with the support of good staff and a network of local volunteers."

The Abbeyfield Group has a total of 28 houses across Northern Ireland, providing homes for over 230 residents. Each house accommodates between 8 and 10 people, each with their own room.

The group has a strong volunteering ethos, with many local houses supported by a group of ‘friends’ who raise funds to improve home comforts and arrange trips for the residents.

Minister Attwood continued: "I want to particularly thank all those who volunteer to help others, giving of their time and energy without concern for financial gain. Their generosity offers a lifeline to many people who need it most, and I know their work is hugely appreciated."
