McCausland announces funding boost for Omagh's young people

Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland today announced a funding boost of over £98,000 for an ‘After School and Homework’ programme in Strathroy, Omagh.
Monday, 20 June 2011

The three year programme will help provide homework support and childcare for children aged 4 - 12 years old in the Strathroy area. It will also include the following activities:

  • drama workshops;
  • arts and crafts workshops; and
  • educational trips.

It will be held at Strathroy Community Centre and managed by the Strathroy Afterschool and Homework Club.

Nelson McCausland said: “This is good news for the children of Omagh neighbourhood renewal area. The programme will help enhance the levels of educational attainment in the area and build confidence in pupils.

“I recognise that if we are to tackle the long term spiral of deprivation we must improve the life chances of those living in our most vulnerable communities. It is vital that all our children, regardless of background are given the opportunity to achieve their full potential”.

To date, the total amount of money spent by DSD on neighbourhood renewal projects in Omagh is over £2.5 million.

Notes to editors:

  1. The Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy “People and Places,” which was published in June 2003, sets out governments proposals for closing the gap between the quality of life for people in the most deprived neighbourhoods and the rest of society.
  2. The Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy has four interlinking strategic objectives:
    Community Renewal – to develop confident communities that are able and committed to improving the quality of life in the areas;
    Economic Renewal – to develop economic activity in the most deprived neighbourhoods and connect them to the wider urban economy;
    Physical Renewal – to help create attractive, safe, and sustainable environments in the most deprived neighbourhoods; and
    Social Renewal – to improve social conditions for the people who live in the most deprived neighbourhoods through better co-ordinated public services and the creation of safer environments.
