McCausland awards £300,000 funding boost for health programme in Newry

Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland has awarded funding for a four year health and well being improvement programme in Newry.
Monday, 20 June 2011

The programme aims to improve the physical and mental health of residents within the Newry Neighbourhood Renewal Area.

Minister McCausland said: "The links between deprivation and poor health are well known. This funding will help to tackle this issue by offering a range of structured health promotion projects targeting physical and mental health issues including emotional well-being. It will help to improve the quality of the lives of residents in the Newry Neighbourhood Renewal Area and address some of the problems identified by the Neighbourhood Partnership Board in its Action Plan for regenerating the area.”

The programme has been financed with a grant of £296,245 from the Department for Social Development’s Neighbourhood Renewal Investment Fund, which tackles disadvantage in Northern Ireland’s most deprived communities. The Southern Health Trust has provided a further £100,000 and will manage the project over the four year period.

Notes to editors:

  1. The Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy “People and Places,” which was published in June 2003, sets out governments proposals for closing the gap between the quality of life for people in the most deprived neighbourhoods and the rest of society.
  2. The Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy has four interlinking strategic objectives:
    - Community Renewal – to develop confident communities that are able and committed to improving the quality of life in the areas;
    - Economic Renewal – to develop economic activity in the most deprived neighbourhoods and connect them to the wider urban economy;
    - Physical Renewal – to help create attractive, safe, and sustainable environments in the most deprived neighbourhoods; and
    - Social Renewal – to improve social conditions for the people who live in the most deprived neighbourhoods through better co-ordinated public services and the creation of safer environments.
