Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland today announced a funding boost of over £160,000 for a Neighbourhood Renewal Co-ordinator in the Coalisland and Dungannon areas.
Wednesday, 22 June 2011

The co-ordinator will play a key role in helping to implement the neighbourhood renewal agenda for action for the area. The co-ordinator will also liaise with applicants and programme managers to ensure projects, which have been identified as central to improving the lives of people living within the Coalisland & Dungannon Neighbourhood Renewal Areas, are developed and delivered.

Minister McCausland said: “This is good news for the Coalisland and Dungannon Neighbourhood Renewal Areas. The funding of a co-ordinator will establish solid foundations in the area and manage important actions set out within the neighbourhood renewal agenda for action.”

“By contributing to this project my Department is demonstrating its commitment to improving the quality of life and social conditions for people living in Coalisland and Dungannon.”

The £161,000 package will also fund administrative support through Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council.

The total amount of Department for Social Development funding committed to Coalisland and Dungannon neighbourhood renewal areas to date are £1.3million and £1.18million respectively.

Notes to editors:

  1. The Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy “People and Places,” which was published in June 2003, sets out governments proposals for closing the gap between the quality of life for people in the most deprived neighbourhoods and the rest of society.
  2. The Neighbourhood Renewal Strategy has four interlinking strategic objectives:
    Community Renewal – to develop confident communities that are able and committed to improving the quality of life in the areas;
    Economic Renewal – to develop economic activity in the most deprived neighbourhoods and connect them to the wider urban economy;
    Physical Renewal – to help create attractive, safe, and sustainable environments in the most deprived neighbourhoods; and
    Social Renewal – to improve social conditions for the people who live in the most deprived neighbourhoods through better co-ordinated public services and the creation of safer environments.
