Social Development Minister announces £450,000 for planned public realm scheme in Cookstown

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie, today announced £450,000 funding towards a Public Realm scheme in Cookstown.

Designed to create a Civic space in the Burn Road area of the town centre, and to compliment the civic buildings such as the Burnavon Theatre, the scheme will transform Burn Road, creating a more useable space capable of hosting public events.

Minister Ritchie said: “I am pleased to make this announcement of funding for Cookstown. This historical, market town in mid-Ulster will greatly benefit from the planned works. This scheme will create a central focal point for the town, and will provide a suitable space for Civic and Community events."

Councillor Ian McCrea MLA, Chairman Cookstown District Coucnil said: “On behalf of my colleagues within Cookstown District Council and Cookstown Town Centre Forum I welcome the announcement of this significant investment to further enhance and improve the Public Realm along Burn Road. The proposed infrastructure improvement will make a further contribution to the economic progress and performance of Cookstown town centre”.

The scheme will include hard and soft landscaping, new street furniture, paving and re-surfacing. It is hoped that construction will commence early next year.

1. The Burn Road Public Realm scheme is expected to cost in the region of £489,000 with a £450,000 contribution from DSD and £39,000 from Cookstown District Council. Construction of the scheme is planned to commence in January 2009.
