Ritchie confirms funding package for An Culturlann

Wednesday, 3 March 2010

Social Development Minister, Margaret Ritchie has today confirmed funding for the refurbishment of An Culturlann in West Belfast.

The funding is part of a combined £1.7million investment package which will greatly enhance the heart of the Gaeltacht Quarter in West Belfast. Doubts were cast about some elements of the funding but after considerable negotiations by the Minister she was able to secure the investment.

Announcing the funding following a meeting today with representatives from the Gaeltacht Quarter, Margaret Ritchie said: "This is great news for the people of West Belfast. Crucial funding for the refurbishment of An Culturlann is a welcome boost for the enhancement of the heart of the Gaeltacht Quarter. This dedicated Irish Language centre is an invaluable resource for the people and I welcome this investment for its future.

"I remain committed to the regeneration of West Belfast and in the current economic climate, funding to maximise the potential of this Gaeltacht Quarter area is timely, important and a beacon of hope for the whole community."

An Culturlann is a three floor building that offers space for artistic and theatrical expression, a café, tourist information office, gift and book shop, community radio and a dedicated Irish Language centre.

The Director of Culturlann, Eimear Ní Mhathúna said she was delighted with Minister Ritchie’s announcement: "This funding is the final piece in the jigsaw required to enable the development of the Culturlann building in the heart of the Gaeltacht Quarter."
