Minister opens £1.2million housing scheme for older people
Thursday, 1 November 2007A social housing project for older people was officially opened today by the Social Development Minister, Margaret Ritchie MLA.
The Minister was at Ballysillan Close, where BIH Housing Association has built a £1.2m scheme providing 10 self contained bungalows, including one for wheelchair use.
The scheme also contains 17 town houses and apartments for owner occupation.
Following the unveiling of a plaque, the Minister toured the homes and met with tenants: She said:
“I know only a little of the lengths to which you had to go to make this scheme a reality. But you found a site that was close to public transport links and local amenities and was capable of supporting a mixed tenure scheme. It was clearly well worth the effort.”
In reference to the private development on the site the Minster went on to say:
“This scheme is also an excellent example of mixed tenure housing. I believe that what makes a community sustainable is a well integrated mix of decent housing of different types and tenures that can support a wide range of households of different sizes, ages and incomes.
“Sustainable communities are places where people want to live and work, both now and in the future.”
