Randlestown Gateway to get makeover - Ritchie
Tuesday, 24 November 2009Social Development Minister, Margaret Richie MLA, today announced funding of £226,417 towards the overall costs of a complete makeover for the gateway entrance to Randalstown.
The area it will cover is characterised by an estate landscape with historic terraced houses and dramatic landmark structures. It also includes the gatehouse of the O’Neill estate, the Viaduct and stone road bridge over the river Maine.
Commenting on the scheme Margaret Ritchie said: “ The planned works will contribute positively to the image of the town and promote shared spaces for everyone to enjoy.
"The benefits derived from this investment will encourage the establishment and continued preservation of the town’s heritage for the visitors and residents of Randalstown. I look forward to seeing the completed regeneration of this historic area of the town”
As one of the areas identified in the town’s masterplan for public realm improvements, the work’s will include the replacement and some realignment of the existing footpath and kerbing, an upgrade the existing street lighting and removal of overhead utilities cables and associated poles.
The Mayor of Antrim, Councillor Adrian Cochrane-Watson welcomed the Minister’s announcement and said: “Antrim Borough Council is committed to the sustainable development of all our towns and villages, and this investment by DSD comes at a crucial time for Randalstown going forward. The Council has been working in partnership with Randalstown ARCHES Association, the local community regeneration company on a wide range of town centre projects for several years now and more recently the Randalstown Masterplan itself. The Minister’s announcement today will help realise major part of the Masterplan and on behalf of the Council I am looking forward to seeing the improvements to the town that the new scheme will bring.”
Work is scheduled to start in January 2010 and will last for approximately three months.
