Ritchie visits City Centre after invite from Newry Chamber

Friday, 27 November 2009

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie today visited Newry to see at first hand the condition of streets and open spaces in the City Centre.

The visit took place following an invitation from the President of Newry Chamber of Commerce and Trade, Conor Patterson.

The Minister visited Hill Street, Margaret Square, Mary Street, Monaghan Street and Merchants Quay. The Chamber has identified a need for physical improvements in these areas, in order to facilitate their regeneration.

Margaret Ritchie said: “I have visited Newry on many occasions and know the area well. Today’s visit has allowed me to see at first hand the condition of the public realm in the City Centre. I am aware of its importance within our towns and cities. It can create a feel good factor for local businesses, residents and visitors. This is vital to the future regeneration and investment potential of an area.

“It has been very interesting to hear details of Newry Chamber of Commerce and Trade’s vision for these areas. While I recognise the need for further Public Realm works in Newry City Centre, funding for regeneration schemes is limited at present. However, I will ensure that my officials consider the needs of the City when preparing forward work plans for public realm schemes.”
