Postal dispute and benefit payments advice

Tuesday, 20 October 2009

The Social Security Agency (SSA) has issued advice to customers in light of the forthcoming postal dispute.

A spokesperson for the SSA said: “Most benefit recipients in Northern Ireland (98%) will be unaffected by the dispute and will continue to receive their benefit as normal via their bank account or Post Office Card account. They have nothing further to do. With regard to those the 2% of customers who are paid by cheque, they can, if they wish, ask for their benefit paying branch to arrange for their payment to be made direct to their bank account or a Post Office card account.

Further, every effort is being made to ensure that customers who receive cheque payments through the post will still get them on time. However, some customers may experience a delay in receiving their payments. Anyone who does not receive their payment on the expected date, and who requires urgent assistance, should contact their benefit paying office immediately.”

The Agency will issue further advice should there be any change to these arrangements.
