Ritchie announces further funding boost for Derry’s Waterside

Monday, 26 October 2009

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie today announced a funding boost of £420,000 to radically improve one of the main gateways into Derry city centre.

The project, which has been developed in partnership by DSD and DRD Roads Service, will significantly enhance the important Victoria Road gateway route into the City. The work involves:

  • the removal of the existing unsightly railings;
  • construction of a decorative stone wall;
  • upgrades to the street lighting;
  • treatment of Japanese knotweed; and
  • tree and shrub pruning.

Welcoming the project, Margaret Ritchie said: “This scheme will transform the appearance of the Victoria Road route and open up the stunning views of the river and the historic city beyond. It will enhance the road, making it safer for pedestrians and motorists alike. The new decorative wall will complement the nearby Derry City Council gateway signage and the existing walled entrances to Victoria Park and Victoria Gate.

“I am confident that this project together with my Department’s City Centre Public Scheme, and the new Peace Bridge will play an important role in attracting more visitors to Derry in the years ahead.”

Commenting on the project, Roads Minister, Conor Murphy said: “I welcome the decision by the Department for Social Development to fund the works on Victoria Road, which will continue the process of improving gateways to the city.

“The current proposals will not only improve the physical environment, making this approach to the city more attractive, but will also have overall safety benefits to the travelling public.

“The proposed scheme will also enhance and support future proposals currently being developed by my Department’s Roads Service to upgrade the roads and footways in this area.”
