Ballyclare town centre gets a new look - Ritchie
Wednesday, 16 September 2009Social Development Minister, Margaret Ritchie has officially opened the new £676,000 Public Realm Scheme in Ballyclare town centre today.
The scheme, which involved the replacement of the existing street surfaces and the replacement of street lighting, will enhance the overall look of the area for both residents and visitors to the historic town.
Margaret Ritchie said: “The regeneration of Ballyclare’s town square compliments the recent refurbishment of the town hall and now provides an attractive and clear central focal point for the town. Over the past few years Ballyclare town centre has suffered from a decline in retail spending and unfortunately a number of properties in the town remain vacant.
“I trust that these improvements will make a significant difference by encouraging private investment that will lead to the revitalisation of the town centre.”
High quality granite paving stone and kerbing, along with street lighting of traditional style columns and lanterns around the Town Hall Square, have been used to regenerate this area in the town.
The Mayor of Newtownabbey, Alderman John Scott said: “The scheme has transformed the town square of Ballyclare. The new paving, railing and lampposts have modernised the square and highlighted the town hall as a focal point. I hope this physical regeneration will act as a catalyst for future development in the town."
Niall McConkey, President of Ballyclare Chamber of Trade said: “It is good to see our town centre being enhanced for everyone in the town and for visitors. Our town centre is the heart of the community, we want people to feel proud of Ballyclare and the work which has been done ensures this is the case."
