Attwood opens new youth and dance studio
Wednesday, 29 September 2010Social Development Minister Alex Attwood today officially opened the newly refurbished St Patrick’s Youth Centre and Dance Studio in Donaghmore, Tyrone.
The multi-functional centre, funded through the Department’s Modernisation Fund Capital Programme, will provide sports, dance, drama and recreational activities for people in the Donaghmore and surrounding areas.
The £283,000 funding has enabled existing floor space to be refurbished, providing a modern dance studio with a sprung floor and mirrored wall. It has also allowed the facility to be physically integrated with the Torrent Centre, the flagship sports and business centre in Donaghmore.
Alex Attwood said: “The Youth Centre and Dance Studio is a good asset for the people of Donaghmore. Dramatic arts and dance are excellent social and physical outlets for all age groups, along with the many sporting activities available. This centre will encourage safe recreation and help promote the health and well-being of people in this rural area.
“I want to target resources in a way that has maximum impact and I welcome that the aims of the Modernisation Programme are being achieved in practical terms as demonstrated here today. It is encouraging to see organisations grow and develop. The St Patrick’s Centre is a hub for everyone in the local area from pre-school to retirement and all ages in between.”
Niall McGinn, Glasgow Celtic and Northern Ireland footballer said: “I really cherish my memories of ‘The Youth Club’. It was the place where memories were made and friendships lasted a lifetime.”
Adrian Cush, St Patrick’s GFC Tyrone GAA – Ulster Footballer said: “St Patrick’s Youth Club was the place where sporting skills were nurtured and developed in an open, relaxed and friendly environment. It was the centrepiece throughout our teenage years.”
