First Minister the Rt Hon Peter D. Robinson MLA and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP, MLA have expressed their disappointment and astonishment at the reported decision not to bring the Fleadh Cheoil to Derry/Londonderry in 2013.

Commenting the First Minister said: “I was surprised and disappointed to learn that there is doubt over whether this huge festival of music and culture will be held in Londonderry in 2013. Were such an outcome to be the case this would be a huge disappointment for many people in the city and beyond.
"Whatever the justification for not supporting the local bid it cannot be justified on the grounds of security issues. There is absolutely no reason to believe that this event would be attacked.
"I am firmly of the view that any concerns which may have arisen must not be allowed to jeopardise an event that which would be enjoyed by many in the North West particularly as the focus will be on the city as UK City of Culture in 2013."
The deputy First Minister said: "I hope that circumstances can change to allow the event to happen. The event will attract 300,000 people and could generate £40million for the North West.
“If any of the organisers wish to meet with us in the coming days, so that we can demonstrate to them our commitment to this project and to help allay any concerns, security or otherwise they have, then we would be available for such a discussion.
“I would hope that a decision can be deferred until such time that all issues can be taken into consideration, and that we do not lose this opportunity to showcase the best of Irish culture and music. The people of Derry are very supportive and excited about the possibility of holding the event in the city during the Culture Year celebrations.”
