Glens of Antrim activity map launched by First Minister
Wednesday, 12 December 2007First Minister Rt Hon Dr Ian Paisley has launched a new map aimed boosting tourism in the Antrim Glens area.
The ‘Glens of Antrim’ Activity Map produced by Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland (OSNI) provides visitors with information on the location of approved walks, climbs and top spots for fishing and sailing in the Glens region.
Speaking at the launch the First Minister said: “The launch of this map today represents a very important tool in helping to bolster our resurgent tourism industry in Northern Ireland. The hope is that the variety of activities noted on the map will encourage visitors to keep returning to the area.”
The new waterproof map shows the nine Glens at 1:25 000 scale (4 centimetres to 1 kilometre) and has been created from OSNI’s digital database using the latest technology.
Iain Greenway, Chief Executive of OSNI, said: “Paper maps represent only 5% of the operations of OSNI today. The digital data that we produce has diverse and important uses. These range from planning ambulance routes to enabling investors to decide on suitable locations for their businesses.”
The Glens of Antrim Activity Map is part of a series of maps, with ‘The Mournes’ and ‘The Sperrins’ completing the current series. New maps covering ‘Strangford Lough’ and ‘Upper and Lower Lough Erne’ are set for release over the coming months.
