Robinson and McGuinness meet victims of institutional abuse
Thursday, 22 July 2010First Minister Peter D Robinson MLA and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP MLA have described their meeting with victims of institutional abuse as significant and positive.
Speaking following the meeting at Stormont Castle the Ministers said they were deeply moved by the stories of victims.
“This morning we listened to some deeply moving and harrowing stories of abuse. Victims are entitled to a fulsome apology from those responsible and we have assured them that we will take the lead in moving these issues forward and co-ordinate with relevant departments. Everyone appreciates that this is a highly complex and sensitive issue that must be resolved.
“As we look to learn the lessons of the past there is much that we can do for victims in the present ensuring that their current needs are met.
“There is no doubt that the victims of such abuse have been greatly wronged and we are determined to help them in their quest for answers.
“We have agreed a number of steps as a follow up to our meeting and these will be followed through on over the coming period.”
