New awards scheme to recognise Intercultural Achievements
Wednesday, 31 March 2010A new awards scheme to recognise the work of those combating racism and promoting integration has been launched by the Junior Ministers.
Nominations from groups, communities and individuals are now being invited for the Intercultural Achievement Awards sponsored by OFMDFM in partnership with the Housing Executive, the PSNI and the NIO.
Announcing the awards scheme Junior Minister Gerry Kelly said: “While we have made progress in transforming our society, sectarianism, racism and intolerance are still too evident.
“These awards will also provide an opportunity to counter the myths and negative perceptions that can exist around migration and minority ethnic communities. On a practical level the Awards will identify the work which is reaping real benefits on the ground and allow those involved to share their experiences and lessons with their peers,” added Minister Kelly.
The scheme consists of four separate categories:
- Good Race Relations Award (sponsored by OFMDFM)
- Community Cohesion Award (sponsored by NIHE)
- Community Safety Award (sponsored by NIO)
- Community Involvement Award (sponsored by PSNI)
Junior Minister Robin Newton said: “We are looking for organisations and groups who have made a difference in the lives of our broader communities.
“The OFMDFM Good Race Relations Award will recognise good practice by those working to promote good race relations and combat racism in our communities.
“Nominations are invited from organisations who believe that their work provides examples of best practice in the area of race relations. Nominees should provide clear evidence of how they have improved and developed relationships on the ground, both within, and between new and established communities,” added Minister Newton.
