Robinson and McGuinness welcome Congressional delegation to Stormont

Thursday, 3 June 2010

First Minister Peter D. Robinson MLA and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP, MLA have welcomed a delegation of seven US Congressmen to Stormont.

The delegation from the United States Senate Committee on Appropriations visited Northern Ireland to see at first hand the progress being made here.

Mr McGuinness said: “This is an excellent opportunity for the Appropriations Committee to see, at first hand, the positive impact that the International Fund for Ireland (IFI) has made here. The political institutions here have begun to bed down but we still have work to do to ensure that all communities feel the benefits of peace and prosperity. I look forward to working closely with the Committee and the IFI in the future.”

Mr Robinson said: “Throughout the course of the peace process the US Administration has been a constant partner supporting us politically as well as financially. This investment is beginning to pay off. We now have stable institutions here that have the support of the overwhelming majority of people. The relationship between the US and NI continues to be very important, and the appointment of Declan Kelly as the Economic Envoy demonstrates that special commitment which we have enjoyed under three Administrations, Clinton, Bush and Obama.”
