Donaldson leads global forum on shared societies
Thursday, 13 November 2008Junior Minister Jeffrey Donaldson led a plenary session in the Netherlands today focusing leaders on improving social cohesion.
He was speaking at the first Global Forum on Leadership for Shared Societies in Rotterdam which involved high-level and emerging leaders from government, politics, civil society and other decision-shaping institutions.
The forum provides opportunities to explore why and how to build a world safe for difference in countries, cities and societies.
During the plenary session Mr Donaldson spoke of the importance of respect, understanding and acceptance of other traditions.
“We must try to accept that we have a shared past and try to learn from it. We cannot change what has already happened but we can learn from the past and work together to shape a shared and better future for all. I believe that this is not just a challenge for Northern Ireland, but a global one.
“The differences in our societies must cease to be barriers between us. We must learn to live together – not only to be supportive of our respective individual diversities but indeed to be champions for the respect and tolerance of others.”
He added: “The Programme for Government confirms our commitment to continue to challenge sectarianism, racism and intolerance which tarnish our reputation, blight our economic prospects and have a corrosive effect on our society. The Executive and the Assembly are fully committed to addressing these divisions within our society. We are determined to tackle the difficult issues head on and work constructively to build a bright and stable future in Northern Ireland. ”
