Deputy First Minister unveils new sculpture at Galliagh
Friday, 17 September 2010The deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP, MLA has officially unveiled a new public sculpture in Derry.
Situated near St Joseph’s Church in the heart of Galliagh, the new sculpture was designed with input from local schoolchildren and created by local sculptor Maurice Harron.
Mr McGuinness said: “I am honoured to unveil this new sculpture, which will greatly enhance the Galliagh area. The importance of public art in improving the environments where people live, and the difference this makes to the local community, cannot be overestimated. Maurice Harron’s talent for creating impressive art installations is internationally renowned and this striking new sculpture is no exception.”
The deputy First Minister also paid tribute to the Galliagh Development Trust and to the Arts Council for providing £50,000 of funding towards the sculpture under the Re-imaging Communities Programme.
“The Galliagh Development Trust is to be commended for its initiative in taking this project forward and for the Trust’s wider work in the community. I would like to congratulate the Trust, and the local community on the excellent work they have done through this project in improving the quality of the local environment and involving young people in the development of public art.”
