Gerry Kelly launches cross-community RESPECT programme
Thursday, 23 September 2010Junior Minister Gerry Kelly helped launch a series of cross-community events in North Belfast aimed at encouraging respect amongst all sections of the community.
Using debates, historical tours, a conference and discussions the 2010 Respect Programme will focus on the specific themes of Young People, Remembrance, Social and Economic Regeneration, Health and Sport, and Cohesion, Sharing and Integration.
Speaking at the launch, Junior Minister Kelly said: “We recognise the very positive work being taken forward by all those involved in this year’s Programme. It is essential that all communities, and particularly those most affected by social and economic deprivation, benefit from developments in the peace process.
“The Executive is united in the need to grow the economy, safeguard public service and tackle disadvantage. These are pressing issues as we face cuts and continued recession.
“Together we need to address the socio and economic disadvantage which sustains segregation and conflict, and it is in this context that we are supporting this year’s North Belfast Respect Programme, creating a positive environment for local people to explore these issues.”
