Could you be a school governor?

Education Minister, John ODowd, is calling on people from all walks of life to consider volunteering as a school governor.

The governor recruitment campaign comes as the Boards of Governors of all schools locally are being reconstituted during this academic year.

Calling on anyone with an interest to consider the opportunity, Mr O’Dowd said: “School Boards of Governors play an extremely important role in supporting our schools and in ensuring that schools deliver a good quality education for their pupils. They are the first line of accountability in relation to the overall performance and effectiveness of their schools.

“Boards of Governors are made up of representatives of the owners and former owners of schools; parents and teachers; and people from the wider community who have an interest in education.

“There are more than 3,000 governor posts in all types of schools to be filled by people from the wider community. Schools need governors with a wide range of skills, experience and backgrounds, so if you have an interest in education and are enthusiastic and committed, I encourage you to apply.”

Public service as a school governor offers you the opportunity to make a contribution to your local community and to the education and future prospects of children and young people. An appointment as a school governor provides an opportunity for a wide range of people to serve their communities. It also enables governors to gain experience and transferable skills that may be relevant to a variety of other situations including appointments to the boards of public bodies.

While the roles and responsibilities of a school governor are significant and can often be challenging and do require a time commitment, existing governors frequently describe their role as extremely rewarding.

In conclusion the Minister said: “I would encourage anyone with an interest to look at the information booklet and consider whether they wish to apply for a governor post. Everyone has skills and experience to offer – you could play an important role in the life of a school in your community.”
