01 July 2009 - Three people convicted of benefit fraud at Belfast court

Three people were convicted at Belfast Magistrates’ Court yesterday for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Michael Godfrey (54) of Lawnbrook Avenue, Belfast was given a £400 fine and ordered to pay £36 court costs for failure to declare his partner’s earnings while claiming Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £2,301.

Robert Adams (56) of Blythe Street, Belfast was given an 18 month probation order, has to attend a Think First programme and was ordered to pay £22 court costs for wrongful encashment of Income Support totalling £702.

Ronnie McCullough (24) of Templemore Street, Belfast was given a 12 month probation order, has to attend a Think First programme and was ordered to pay £31 court costs for duplicate encashment of Income Support totalling £441.

All are also required to repay the money they wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

This brings to 236 the total number of successful prosecutions this year.
