The Public Realm Improvement scheme is being implemented by the Department for Social Development’s Regional Development Office, in partnership with Newry & Mourne District Council.
The plans, which will be a major boost for the town, include:
- the undergrounding of cables
- the upgrading of footpaths and
- increased lighting in Queen Street.
Work is expected to start in January and finish by March 2009.
Speaking about today’s announcement, the minister, Margaret Ritchie said: “The scheme being announced today will further enhance the public realm in Warrenpoint town centre, making it more appealing to residents, businesses and visitors.
“This investment of £500,000 from my department is designed to target an area falling short of its obvious potential. It will complement the recent works already undertaken in the area by the private sector and has the potential to act as a catalyst in reinvigorating the town centre to improve trading conditions.”
DSD are providing funding of £500,000 with Newry & Mourne District Council expected to provide the remainder.
