She said: “On 10 August I made it clear that, as a result of the unacceptable violence at Carrickfergus and Kilcooley, the conditions on which the CTI contract had been based had been breached. Rather than end the funding, I provided an opportunity for the UDA to demonstrate convincingly its commitment to end criminality and violence and to decommission.
“The ball is in the UDA’s court. The people of Northern Ireland want to hear what the UDA is going to do. They are not interested in vague promises of what they might do or might have done. Action not words is needed now.
“Earlier this week with Lady Sylvia Hermon MP, I visited the Kilcooley estate where my Department has spent the best part of £1million to help that community transform itself. I met and was welcomed by the community at large – law-abiding people who want to get on with their lives and add to the choices available to their children. What is the UDA’s message to the people of Kilcooley and all the other areas where they are active?”
