21 November 2008 - Robinson acknowledges work of co-operation Ireland

First Minister Peter D. Robinson MP, MLA acknowledged the important work of Co-Operation Ireland at the organisations inaugural gala dinner last night.

Speaking at the event held in the Great Hall at Queens University the First Minister acknowledged the work Co-operation Ireland has undertaken in overcoming division and promoting understanding.

The Minister said: “Co-operation Ireland has been instrumental in helping to build the type of future we all want to see, that of a prosperous, vibrant Northern Ireland.

“Significant progress has been made in recent years addressing the legacy of division but we must however not be complacent. Our population is now much more culturally diverse and care must be taken to avoid making the mistakes of the past and to ensure our old divisions are not replicated in the new communities that have come here to live and work.

“Everyone living in Northern Ireland, no matter what their ability or background, must be encouraged to participate and feel part of our community. Every one of us can make a positive contribution to our society and must be given the opportunity to do so.”

“Many challenges lie ahead but we believe that these can be overcome and for the first time in a generation, we will face those challenges in a climate of hope. We will strive to create a region of opportunity and build a better future for all the people of Northern Ireland. That is the challenge we have set for ourselves.”
