Wednesday, 22 February 2012

Mr Robinson met with pupils, staff and school governors during his visit and was given a tour of the school’s science and technology departments as well as viewing the college’s fitness suite.

During the visit the First Minister met with the schools’ top achieving GCSE and A Level pupils. He said: "The tremendous success achieved by Carrickfergus College is down to the drive, dedication and commitment of all those involved. It is a credit to the students who have worked so hard, the parents who have supported them and the staff who have encouraged them along the way.

"Most importantly, the hopes and aspirations of the young people who come through the doors of this college, regardless of their background, are being raised. The College is to be commended for ensuring that the opportunity for success is open to each and every one of them.

"In these difficult economic times, the work of educating our young people has never been more important. By continuing to raise educational standards and help our young people develop the skills they need to succeed we will help drive the economy in a positive direction as outlined in the Programme for Government.

In conclusion the First Minister concluded: "I have thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Carrickfergus College today and I thank everyone involved for their warm welcome. I commend the teachers, staff for their continuing hard work and wish all the young people attending the school every success in the future."
