Rivers Agency highlights dangers of dumping rubbish into rivers

Wednesday, 8 September 2010

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Rivers Agency is reminding the public of the important role they can play in reducing the likelihood of flooding by refraining from dumping rubbish into rivers and watercourses.

Heavy and persistent rain this week is a reminder of the potential consequences of flooding and Philip Mehaffey, Rivers Agency Operations Director, believes that many people may be unaware of the dangers posed by depositing items close to or in a river channel.

“As we approach the wetter months, we’d like to take this opportunity to remind the public that dumping material in or near a river can easily lead to blockages and subsequent flooding.

“Hedge and tree cuttings are major culprits which wash down and block the grilles.  Larger items of furniture should also be disposed of properly at Council waste sites and many Councils operate a free collection service for disposing bigger items.

“People can also help reduce the risk of damage to their own property by clearing out gullies and guttering which will enable water to flow freely into sewers and rivers.  Now is a good time to ensure that your house insurance has been renewed and covers your property from flood water damage.”
