Gildernew supports animal welfare partnership at Auld Lammas Fair
Wednesday, 10 March 2010Minister Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA met a delegation from Moyle District Council to discuss the protection of animals at the Auld Lammas Fair.
Addressing concerns of Council during a meeting today, the Minister said a continued partnership approach would help to enhance the welfare of all animals at the world famous Fair held annually in Ballycastle.
The Minister said: “Horse welfare at traditional fairs on the island of Ireland is a major issue and one in which I am very interested. While my Department cannot take on the responsibility of animal owners to provide for the needs of their livestock, we will carry out checks to ensure animal welfare is protected. I believe the partnership approach in recent years has worked well. A combined effort involving the Council, DARD, the PSNI and animal charities will continue to improve the welfare of all animals at the Fair.”
The Minister added: “Our focus is ensuring that no animal cruelty takes place and that horses are not subject to distress or suffering. Veterinary Officers have attended both days of the Lammas Fair over the last three years, and will again be part of a multi-disciplinary team in place to see the enhancement of all animal welfare."
