Gildernew celebrates 50th anniversary of Ulster Grassland Society
Wednesday, 1 April 2009Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA today addressed members of the Ulster Grassland Society (UGS) at their Golden Anniversary reception.
The Society was established for those that have an interest in grassland production and it is one of the biggest local grassland societies across these islands.
Speaking at the anniversary, Minister Gildernew said: “I believe that the Ulster Grassland Society has made an important contribution to the farming industry and indeed the social and economic development of our agricultural community over the past fifty years.
“It is a well known and highly respected organisation that brings together research workers, farmers, advisors, teachers and technical members of the agricultural industry. Many of the techniques and practices we employ in grassland management today can be traced directly back to members of the Society.”
The Minister concluded by commending the work of the UGS: “I congratulate the Ulster Grassland Society on its achievements over the past 50 years and wish them continued success in the future.”
Guests at the Stormont dinner included past Presidents of the Society going back 50 years and included a number of founding members.
