13 December 2007 - Relaxation of Foot and Mouth restrictions expected soon

Foot and Mouth Disease restrictions in Britain are expected to be relaxed this weekend.

A new EU Commission Decision is expected to restore the Foot and Mouth Disease free status of most of Britain. The extra certification required when exporting meat and dairy products to other Member States will be removed.

This will also improve Britain’s ability to export live animals. However, the export ban on live animals from the low risk area, about 50 km around the outbreak sites, will continue meantime.

It is anticipated that this new decision will be published in the Official Journal on 15 December 2007.

Further details about the subsequent easing of trade restrictions between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, including those for live animals, will be announced later. DARD will continue to keep the industry informed and update its advice on trade conditions as soon as possible.
