DARD launches postgraduate research awards 2009

Tuesday, 10 February 2009

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) today announced the annual Postgraduate Agriculture and Food Research Awards for the academic year beginning October 2009.

Applications must be received by 5.00pm on Friday 13 March 2009.

DARD will award up to 8 studentships for full-time research, leading to a PhD qualification. For 2009 we have identified priority research themes and potential project areas which will enhance our agriculture, food and rural sectors in the future.  We will give preference to applications within our research priorities.

Discussing the benefits of the award scheme, past student Dr Peter Mc Evoy said: " I really enjoyed my Postgraduate studentship - although it was hard work!  The DARD award gave me the opportunity to undertake research in an area which not only interested me, but also benefited our agri-food industry.  I graduated from Queen's University Belfast in 2004. I then undertook a series of post-doctoral research posts and am now working as a Government Wildlife and Conservation Officer. My PhD qualification has been invaluable to me throughout my career so far."

Further details on priority research themes and application forms are available from the our website at www.dardni.gov.uk/index/learning-and-education/postgraduate_study.htmlink to external website or by telephoning Deirdre Cummings on (028) 9052 4710.
