Gildernew meets with Jim Nicholson and cattle traders and stock owners association

Friday, 19 February 2010

Minister Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA has met with Jim Nicholson, MEP, and the Cattle Trade and Stock Owners Association to discuss a number of issues.

The Cattle Trade and Stock owners Association was represented by their Chairman Cecil Robinson and Secretary Roy Gibson.

Speaking after the meeting the Minister said : “Today’s meeting has provided a good opportunity to discuss the issues that are affecting cattle traders here in relation to exports of cattle to the south of Ireland, Britain and Europe.”

The Minister added: “We had a useful discussion and issues were raised with regard to trade within Ireland. What this demonstrated to me, is that it if we are to resolve trade issues on the island we must press ahead now, without any further delays, with securing formal agreement to the All Island Animal Health and Welfare Strategy. It is my firm belief that if the Strategy was agreed many of the difficulties highlighted to me today could be resolved. The main aim of the Strategy is to secure the free movement of animals on the island of Ireland.

“Mr Nicholson’s continued interest in agriculture matters, and the valuable work he does in the European Parliament, is very welcome and I look forward to his continued support.”
