08 January 2008 - Farmer convicted at Newry court

Samuel Cooper, Derryleckagh Road, Newry was convicted at Newry Magistrates' Court on 07 January 2008 of nine charges under the Cattle Identification (Notification of Births, Deaths and Movements) Regulations (NI) 1999.

Mr. Cooper was convicted in his absence and was fined £900 plus £64 costs.

Notes to Editors:

  1. Mr. Cooper was convicted of eight charges, of being the keeper of bovine animals, in contravention of Article 7.1 of the Council Regulation (EC) 1760/2000 and Article 6.3 of Commission Regulation (EC) No 2629/97, failed to notify the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the movement of a bovine animal onto his holding in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 7(2) of the Cattle Identification (Notification of Births, Deaths and Movements) Regulations (NI) 1999, or the birth of the animal on his holding, as required by Regulation 6(1) of the said Regulations, contrary to Regulation 5(1) of the said Regulations.
  2. Mr. Cooper was also convicted of one charge, of being the keeper of bovine animals, in contravention of Article 7.1 of the Council Regulation (EC) 1760/2000 and Article 6.3 of Commission Regulation (EC) No 2629/97, failed to notify the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the movement of a bovine animal onto his holding in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 7 of the Cattle Identification (Notification of Births, Deaths and Movements) Regulations (NI) 1999, contrary to Regulation 5(1) of the said Regulations.
  3. Breaches of the Cattle Identification Regulations weaken and undermine the cattle traceability system in Northern Ireland.
