Gildernew meets marine task force

Minister Michelle Gildernew, MP, MLA, has met with representatives of the Marine Task Force to discuss fishing and the marine environment.

Speaking after the meeting the Minister said: “The health of our seas is central to the future sustainable development of our fisheries. I was glad to get the chance to talk about a wide range of issues with the Marine Task Force. In particular I wanted to assure them of my commitment to promoting profitable and sustainable fisheries consistent with a diverse and strong marine environment.

“Fisheries here are a devolved matter and will not be included in the Marine Bill which covers England and Wales, however I will be reviewing what measures we need to adopt to ensure that we have a consistent approach to fisheries enforcement and control throughout these islands. Consumers are becoming more aware of how fish is caught and want assurances that it comes from sustainable fisheries. I am keen to support our industry to continue to meet these challenging demands and obtain the maximum value from their catch.

“I welcomed the interest of the Marine Task Force and urged them to participate fully in consultations on forthcoming inshore fisheries policy and fisheries funding.”
