Useful discussions took place on a wide range of issues affecting rural areas, including PPS14 and rural deprivation.
The Minister told the delegation that her Department, as part of the Programme for Government, is currently preparing proposals for the Executive on the development of a Rural White Paper. She said “I hope that an agreed Rural White Paper can identify the challenges facing rural communities and set out what the Executive can collectively do to improve the sustainability of these communities. The GAA and other stakeholders will have an important part to play as development of a Rural White Paper moves forward.”
Representatives attending the meeting from the GAA were Provincial Secretary and Director Danny Murphy, Stephen McGeehan, Ryan Feeney and Geraldine McKananagh.
Speaking after the meeting the Minister said, “My Department recognises the contribution that organisations like the GAA make towards sustaining rural communities and it is my hope that further meetings of this nature can take place with a range of different organisations. By working together we can ensure that the rural way of life is protected and enhanced.”
