31 January 2008 - Gildernew comments on the agricultural incomes figures for 2007

Minister Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA welcomed the reported rise in agricultural income figures for 2007 published today by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD).

The Agriculture Minister said: “I am very pleased to note the 46% rise in the level of total income from farming in 2007 to £233million. Strong global markets for milk products and cereals have been a significant factor in this increase.

The Minister continued: “However, I know that not all farmers have benefitted from the strength of global markets. The large increase in concentrate feed costs has put huge strains on the intensive livestock sectors in particular. I recognise the challenges facing the red meat sector, as illustrated so graphically by the report of the Red Meat Task Force last autumn. Therefore, while the reported rise in income in 2007 is extremely welcome, there is much work to be done to help improve the position of all farmers.”
