22 July 2008 - Gildernew meets potato processors

Minister Michelle Gildernew MP MLA has met, at Loughry Campus, Cookstown, representatives of one of the largest local potato packing and processing companies.

The minister met Angus Wilson and Lewis Cunningham, CEO and MD of Wilson’s Country Potatoes, to discuss current concerns within the potato production and marketing sector.

The issues discussed included current market conditions and their impact on growers, as well as the multiple retailers’ support for the local potato industry.

Speaking after the meeting, the minister said: “This was a useful meeting and continued the process of engagement with the potato sector that started with my visit to Wilson’s Country processing plant last June. I am aware of the challenges the sector faces in the current climate of increasing costs, but by working collaboratively as an industry I believe local potatoes, whether seed or ware, can develop sustainable markets which will enable the potato sector here to gain strength.”
