Following the meeting, the minister said: “Although the pigmeat market has been recently experiencing pressures caused by rising feed and fuel costs, there are some hopeful signs with margins recovering and a continuing upward trend in prices. I welcome Pro-pork's collaborative approach to working in the sector not least because of the collective efficiencies to be achieved.
“I have also advised Pro-pork today on the measures, including funding, which are currently available and those which will be available shortly to assist those affected by the present volatile economic climate.
“Today’s meeting has been a useful opportunity for me to update Pro-Pork and re-assure the delegation that my department will continue to provide as much assistance as we can. This can take many forms and includes practical advice, technical information, financial support, relevant training and appropriate mentoring to meet the changing needs of today’s agri-food industry.”
