Gildernew praises supermarket chain boost to dairy farmers

Friday, 31 July 2009

Minister Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA has praised efforts to extend Sainsbury’s Dairy Development Group to include local dairy farmers.

Sainsbury’s Dairy Development Group is a partnership scheme between the supermarket and the local milk sector to improve transparency in the supply chain. This group will consist of a dedicated pool of farmers producing milk specifically for Sainsbury’s local stores.

Commenting on the supermarket chain’s initiative the Minister said: “Sainsbury’s announcement offers a welcome boost to the local dairy industry and will deliver benefits to those farmers who are participating in the scheme.

“Their decision to extend the Dairy Development Group to the north couldn’t have come at a better time, given the harsh economic realities that the local agri-food sector is currently facing. The supermarket’s announcement today demonstrates their commitment to local farmers and is a good example of best practice by a multiple retailer.

“Initiatives like the Dairy Development Group go some way to bridge the gap between ‘gate and plate’ in the modern supply-chain. I am always keen to encourage any initiative or opportunity, which helps to protect and enhance the sustainability of local farming.”
